A mixed-use project for the Housing Authority of New Haven, Wilmont Crossing is a new 4-story structure with retail space and a community center on the ground floor and 47 one- and two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors.

Designed with a human-scaled Arts & Crafts style image, the structure features a canopied arcade for pedestrian circulation, a “front porch” entry for residents, and a strong relationship to the street. The apartment interiors are flooded with natural light, enhanced by high quality wood cabinetry, and spacious handicapped accessible bathrooms. The range of green design strategies integrated into the building include daylighting, overhangs to shade the south-facing windows, an energy recovery system, and recycled and low-VOC materials. The south-facing side of the gable roof is pitched to receive a future PV installation. The design process involved the interactive use of computer modeling as a communication and collaborative design technique.
